Population

The population consists of 98,215,000 people. That is basically 1/3 of the US population. The Philippines is pretty split evenly between rural and urban. The downtown cities is pretty modernized with a lot of cities with skyscrapers, along with countryside beaches and resorts; while the rural areas have families living with their own farmed agriculture products to survive. Some of the major cities are: Quezon City with a population of 2,761,720, Manila with a population of 1,652,171, and Caloocan with 1,489,040 people. (Trading Economics)

Agriculture

Philippines is known for their agricultural success in bananas, rice, corn, mangoes, tobacco, and coconuts. Their climate is really tropical, which allows them to be able to farm and produce these tropical, wet products. (Encyclopedia of Nations)
Their diet was greatly influenced by countries who have been to or have controlled their territories. They are influenced by the Spanish, Chinese, and most recently, Americans. The rural areas usually consume their own home-grown rice with fish due to their location and their farm fresh eateries. However, teenagers and young Philippines eat fast food and Americanized food like hot dogs, hamburgers, and pizzas on almost a  daily basis. (Famous Wonders)

Industry and Tourism

Their farming industry is really influenced by geography and climate. Due to their tropical humid climate int he country, they are able to farm rice, corn, coconuts and other products; and be able to export them to other countries for profits. Also, since they are so close to the water, they are able to fish commercially as well.
Many people from other countries may travel to the Philippines for their beaches and resorts near the shores. However, climate doesn't really play a huge role in the tourism department. (Philippines Department of Tourism)

Cultural Activities

Most of the population of Philippines are Roman Catholic.
The only main event that is related to climate and weather in the Philippines is the tropical storm Washi that destroyed the northern Philippines on December 16th, 2011. This storm cause many life-taking mudslides and floods, causing 1,257 deaths. (NOAA)

  1. It is surprising to see a population 1/3 of the United States living in an area only 3.7% the land mass of the United States. I wonder if this has a large effect on the air pollution in the cities.
